New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) announced the state will give NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City more than $114.6 million to help cover costs associated with Hurricane Sandy.
The academic medical center suffered some of the most extensive damage among New York hospitals. Its main facility, the 705-bed Tisch Hospital, is still not fully reopen but plans to be by the end of the month. The compensation will help cover all costs associated with NYU Langone's preparations in advance of the storm, evacuations, removal of water and other storm-related expenses.
"Communities across downstate New York were torn apart and devastated by Hurricane Sandy, and now it is time to rebuild stronger than ever before," Gov. Cuomo said in a news release. "These first federal reimbursements will help NYU Langone Medical Center and its 20,000 physicians, scientists, nurses and staff deal with some of the extraordinary damage incurred by Sandy and get back to focusing on serving and caring for New Yorkers."
New York previously estimated the damage costs of Hurricane Sandy will reach nearly $42 billion, with $3.1 billion of that total related to hospitals and other healthcare organizations.
