North Shore-Long Island Jewish Insurance Company in Great Neck, N.Y., has received approval as a health insurer from the New York State Department of Financial Services.
North Shore-LIJ Health System created the newly licensed insurance company, which will sell commercial health plans on and off New York health insurance exchange using the brand name "North Shore-LIJ CareConnect." The insurer's creation marks one of the first times in the state's history that a major health system has established a company to sell commercial insurance.
"This is the new look of health insurance, with the goal of bringing affordable coverage within reach of working families, young people and other individuals and families," said Howard B. Gold, North Shore-LIJ Health System executive vice president of managed care and business development, in a news release. "We'll be offering a new connection for individuals who find it difficult to get access to care and insurance."
