New Mercy Joplin Hospital set to open in March, years after tornado

The new Mercy Joplin (Mo.) Hospital is slated to open March 22, nearly four years after a tornado ripped through the area destroying the old St. John's Medical Center in Joplin, according to a Grove Sun report.

A number of emergency workers, including firefighters, paramedics, police and first responders, recently toured the new Mercy Joplin Hospital, according to the report.

The tornado-resistant building features a chapel and an ER with 34 rooms, six of which are designed for emergency psychiatric patients, among other things, the report reads. Some pieces from the old St. John's Regional Medical Center chapel are also incorporated into the new hospital.
