Under a new law in Illinois, physicians who use outside pathologists or laboratories for anatomic pathology services are required to disclose the actual amount charged for the service to patients.
Effective Jan. 1, 2015, Illinois S.B. 1630, sponsored by Sen. William Haine (D-Alton) and Rep. Sara Feigenholtz (D-Chicago), improves price transparency and includes legal protections against markup charges for anatomic pathology services.
"Under this new Illinois law our patients are protected from inflated healthcare costs," said Robert DeCresce, MD, president of the Illinois Society of Pathologists, in a news release. "Further, the law will shield patients from higher medical bills and reduce overall healthcare costs."
