Nebraska Sen. Adam Morfeld (D-Lincoln) wants to prevent victims from being inadvertently billed for rape kit examinations, according to a report published by the Omaha World-Herald.
The senator has proposed Legislative Bill 1097, which would make it clear who should be billed and pay for rape kits and related medical care, according to the report.
Currently, law enforcement agencies pay for these rape kit examinations, but Sen. Morfeld's proposed bill would shift that responsibility to the Nebraska Attorney General's Office, which would pay the bills using state and federal funds, according to the Omaha World-Herald.
The Nebraska Attorney General's Office estimates it would cost taxpayers between $500,000 and $750,000 annually for up to 1,000 rape kits.
