Montana's "High-Risk" Insurance Pool Needs More Cash

Although the Department of Health and Human Services has issued $16 million to Montana's federally funded "high-risk" health insurance pool, Montana will need an additional $6 million to $7 million to cover costs in 2012, according to a Billings Gazette report.

HHS distributed the $16 million in the middle of 2010 to fund Montana's "high-risk" pool through 2013. The pools were established in every state part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act to cover people with conditions such as cancer, HIV or others. However, Montana officials said initial per-member, per-month claims costs were higher than expected, according to the report.

Montana's program could serve 400 enrollees, but it has currently helped 290 people. It has not been determined how or if the pool will receive additional funding.
