In 2010, Minnesota non-profit and government hospitals poured roughly $3.4 billion toward community benefits, an increase of nearly 6 percent from 2009, according to a report from the Minnesota Hospital Association (pdf).
Charity care at Minnesota hospitals jumped 27 percent from 2009 to 2010. Uncompensated care totaled $496.5 million, up 4 percent from 2009.
Underfunding from Medicare and Medicaid also exceeded $1.3 billion — or nearly 7 percent of the hospitals' operating expenses — in 2010.
