Members of the Michigan Nurses Association donated $12,500 to RIP Medical Debt, a nonprofit charity that buys medical debt for pennies on the dollar to forgive it, which will be used to pay off medical debt in Michigan, according to a news release from the nurses association.
The donation from the nurses and gifts from other donors will allow RIP to forgive more than $8.9 million in medical debt for the needy statewide.
"We're excited that MNA members across the state are stepping up to help so many Michigan families during this holiday season," Melissa Boals, a registered nurse at Traverse City, Mich.-based Munson Medical Center, said in the union news release.
Names of the other donors were not released. The union said it is also not releasing the names of patients or the medical providers where the debt originated due to privacy concerns.
The nurses and RIP Medical debt also collaborated last year, canceling $1 million in medical debt for 500 Michigan families.
