Rising expenses at Duluth, Minn.-based Essentia Health caused the health system to just about break even in fiscal 2023 even as revenues rose to $2.8 billion.
Essentia Health, which is due to merge with Marshfield (Wis.) Clinic to form a 25-hospital system, reported operating income of $110,000 for the fiscal year ending June 30. Expenses rose 8.4% to total $2.7 billion during the period.
Net income rose to $121.7 million for the year, compared to a net loss of $72.2 million in 2022.
The merger with Marshfield Clinic is expected to close by the end of 2023, Essentia Health said in the filing. The planned transaction is facing scrutiny from the Minnesota attorney general's office.
