More than a third (37 percent) of ACOs in the Medicare Shared Savings Program are assuming downside risk, much more than in previous years, according to an analysis from Avalere.
The number of MSSP ACOs that take on downside risk is likely growing because of more experience with the ACO model, new downside risk options and significant changes made to the MSSP ACO program, Avalere said.
Comparatively, in 2012-17, fewer than a 10th of ACOs participating in MSSP took on downside risk each year, according to the report.
