Massachusetts Doles Out $10M to Bolster 28 Community Hospitals

The Massachusetts Health Policy Commission has awarded $10 million to 28 community hospitals throughout the state to help cope with healthcare reform.

The funds range from a low of $65,000 to Beverly (Mass.) Hospital to a high of $500,000 at Holyoke (Mass.) Medical Center. All hospitals that applied for funding had to be nonteaching, nonprofit community hospitals with prices below Massachusetts' median.

Hospitals plan to use the money to implement electronic health record systems, train new directors and clinical leaders, invest in other technologies and improve patient navigation, among many uses.

The funds are part of the HPC's four-year Community Hospital Acceleration, Revitalization and Transformation, or CHART, program.
