Maine health system scales back services with economic challenges

Brewer, Maine-based Northern Light Health is cutting back services as the health system deals with economic challenges, Bangor Daily News reported Jan. 4.

The health system shuttered inpatient rehabilitation services at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor Dec. 31. On Jan. 1, the health system closed its primary care practice in Oreno.

Additionally, the health system is temporarily limiting its hours at its clinic in Bangor and sold some of its laboratory and testing services to Quest Diagnostics.

"These were the right choices, but also added to deeper deficits which we now need to correct," Northern Light spokesperson Suzanne Spruce told Bangor Daily. "Fiscal year 2022 was a hard year and our situation is not unique, it's a reflection of what is happening in healthcare throughout Maine, across the country, and around the world."
