Maine Democrats vaulted Republican opposition to a Medicaid expansion in the legislature, but were unable to overcome Gov. Paul LePage's veto Wednesday, the last day of its session, according to a report by the Portland Press Herald.
The governor had vetoed a Medicaid expansion provision bundled in a larger package earlier this year. Budget concerns, especially already outstanding debt to hospitals, are his top priority, he has said.
The 95-52 post-veto House vote fell short of the two-thirds majority required, according to the report.
Maine may expand the program in future years, but with the closing of the legislative session, it is unlikely to do so next year and receive the full federal funding for the move.
