Louisiana Senate Committee Votes Against Medicaid Expansion

The Louisiana Senate health committee has voted down a Medicaid expansion proposal, according to a report from The New York Times.

The measure would have put the decision about whether to expand Medicaid under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act in the hands of state voters, according to the report. Gov. Bobby Jindal, a Republican, has staunchly opposed the PPACA and its Medicaid expansion provision. Supporters of expansion in Louisiana have said it would extend Medicaid coverage to 240,000 people, according to the report.

As of March 26, 26 states and the District of Columbia were moving forward with Medicaid expansion this year, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. Nineteen states aren't moving forward with expansion in 2014, and there is open debate in five states.
