Kentucky hospital receives $658k grant to care for coal miners

Greenville, Ky.-based Owensboro Health Muhlenberg Community Hospital received a $658,427 competitive grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration to continue providing health screenings for coal miners and purchase equipment for its Coal Miners Clinic.

"This funding will enable the Coal Miners Clinic at Owensboro Health Muhlenberg Community Hospital to continue providing black lung screening assessments to miners from 12 counties in Western Kentucky," U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, said. "These screenings are necessary for miners to apply for black lung benefits from the state and federal government."

The Coal Miners Clinic at OHMCH has been grant-funded since 1975 and it is one of two federally funded clinics in the state.
