Indianapolis-based Indiana University Health reported revenue of $6.1 billion in 2015, up 6.5 percent from $5.7 billion the year prior.
The jump in annual revenue was partially attributable to a 3.7 percent increase in outpatient surgery volume in 2015. For the three months that ended Dec. 31, 2015, the system saw outpatient surgery volume climb 13.6 percent. IU Health also saw emergency room visits increase 2.2 percent in 2015 compared to the year prior. However, the system experienced a slight year-over-year decrease in admissions and inpatient surgeries in 2015.
The system also benefitted from a 51.8 percent year-over-year increase in revenue attributable to its health plan last year.
IU Health said operating expenses grew to $5.3 billion in 2015, up nearly 7.9 percent from $4.9 billion a year earlier. The growth was partially attributable to an increase in expenses associated with salaries, wages and benefits as the system added employees and medical staff last year.
The system ended 2015 with operating income of $781.8 million, down from $795.3 million a year earlier.
After accounting for a $38.8 million loss on investments, IU Health recorded net income of $612.7 million in 2015, down 15.6 percent from a year earlier.
