Indiana University Health, a 16-hospital system based in Indianapolis, reported a year-over-year increase in revenue and operating income in the first nine months of 2019, according to unaudited financial documents released Oct. 24.
Four things to know:
1. IU Health's operating revenue totaled $4.9 billion in the first nine months of this year, up 5.3 percent from the same period of the year prior. The health system's revenue totaled $1.7 billion in the third quarter of this year, up from $1.6 billion in the same quarter of 2018.
2. The health system's operating expenses climbed 3.2 percent year over year to $4.4 billion in the nine months ended Sept. 30.
3. IU Health ended the first three quarters of 2019 with operating income of $511.6 million, compared to $398.8 million in the same period of the year prior. The health system's operating income totaled $203.6 million in the third quarter of this year, up 73 percent year over year.
4. After factoring in nonoperating income, IU Health reported net income of $883.8 million in the first nine months of this year. That's up from the same period of 2018, when the system reported net income of $467.5 million.
