Boise, Idaho-based St. Luke's Health System saw its income for 2022 vastly reduced amid higher operating expenses and losses on its investment values, leading to a fall in its overall worth.
The healthcare system, which operates 30 hospitals and emergency departments/urgent care centers across the state, reported operating expenses up from almost $3 billion in 2021 to over $3.5 billion in the year ended Sept. 30, 2022, most of that driven by salaries and employee benefits.
With a decline in investment values, St. Luke's reported a fall in its net assets of almost $82 million compared with a gain in 2021 of $337.3 million. The system also reported total long-term debt and lease obligations of $941.8 million compared with $855.9 million in 2021.
St. Luke's Boise Medical Center was named among the top 10 hospitals in the country for avoiding unnecessary testing and procedures by the Lown Institute in May 2022.
