Idaho system reports almost halved contract labor but higher overall expenses

Coeur D'Alene, Idaho-based Kootenai Health has reduced its contract labor costs significantly so far in 2023, but its labor and overall expenses still increased in the first six months of the year.

Overall labor expenses rose 1.4 percent to total $260.4 million even as contract labor costs fell 41 percent, totaling $20.9 million. Overall expenses increased 4 percent to $428.3 million.

The system, which is planning to convert to a nonprofit system from its current publicly owned status, reported an operating loss of $4.7 million on revenue of $448.2 million for the first half of the year versus a $26.5 million loss on $404.8 million revenue last year.

Kootenai Health, the third-largest health system in Idaho, reported an overall loss of $4.6 million for the period versus a loss of $49.5 million in the same period 2022.
