Humana Reports 18% Q2 Profit Increase

Health insurer Humana's second-quarter net income increased 18 percent, from $356 million in 2012 to $420 million this year.

Humana reported total revenues of about $10.3 billion in the second quarter, a 6.4 percent increase from approximately $9.7 billion in the second quarter of 2012. The increase was driven partly by a 6.6 percent increase in premiums and services revenue compared with the second quarter of 2012 due to higher average individual and group Medicare membership.

For the six months ended June 30, 2013, Humana reported net income of $893 million, a 47.8 percent increase from $604 million in the first six months of 2012. Revenues for the six months of this year totaled $20.8 billion, up 4.5 percent from about $19.9 billion last year.
