Hospitals' outpatient revenue inching closer to inpatient revenue

U.S. hospitals are not seeing as big of a divide between inpatient revenue and outpatient revenue, according to the American Hospital Association's latest hospital statistics report.

The report examined data for nonfederal, short-term general and other special hospitals. Researchers studied 5,262 hospitals in 2017 and 5,267 in 2016.

Data showed hospital's gross inpatient revenue was $92.7 billion higher than gross outpatient revenue in 2017. That compares to 2016, when hospitals' gross inpatient revenue was $129.5 billion higher than gross outpatient revenue.

The American Hospital Association attributed the smaller divide to hospitals offering more outpatient services.
