In a letter to the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics, HIMSS said it is imperative that a widespread educational effort be implemented in order for all healthcare stakeholders to deal with the upcoming HIPAA Version 5010 and ICD-10 compliance dates.
Because 5010 implementation is foundational to ICD-10 transformation, HIMSS suggested several things are needed, such as the following:
• Project plans and project teams.
• Communication with vendors.
• Education of all staff who are impacted by the coding and transaction changes.
• Identification of financial resources for hiring additional staff necessary to accomplish the projects.
• Money to pay for the software updates and implementation.
