Pittsburgh-based health insurer Highmark will ask the Pennsylvania Insurance Department for a 4.9 percent increase to the monthly premium of Special Care, its low-income insurance plan, after it sought a nearly 10 percent increase two months ago, according to a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette report.
Special Care became one of the best options for the Pittsburgh-area working poor after the Pennsylvania legislature and Gov. Tom Corbett discontinued the state's $36-a-month adultBasic health insurance program, the report said.
Highmark's plan currently costs $162 per month for an individual and would be about $169 per month if the premium increase is approved.
