HHS hosts medical bill design contest

HHS Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell has issued a challenge to healthcare professionals to design a more simple, consumer-friendly medical bill to address consumers' current frustrations when it comes to healthcare billing.

HHS' contest, called A Bill You Can Understand, is part of a national design and innovation effort to help Americans better understand their financial obligation for healthcare services. Prizes will be awarded according to "easiest bill to understand" and most "transformational approach" to bill design.

The challenge is sponsored in part by AARP and the MadPow design agency, and will be conducted in collaboration with HHS. Several industry partners have agreed to help guide participants through the contest, including the American Medical Association, American Hospital Association, Louisville, Ky.-based Humana and Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente, among others.

Winners will be announced at the September Health 2.0 conference in Santa Clara, Calif.
