The healthcare industry is poised to save $12.4 billion if healthcare organizations fully digitize administrative transactions, according to a report from nonprofit CAQH and highlighted in the Politico Morning eHealth newsletter.
For the year-end 2018 report, CAQH collected data from medical and dental health plans covering nearly half of the insured U.S. population.
Seven common administrative tasks at healthcare organizations, ranked by the percentage that digitized the task in 2018:
- Eligibility and benefit verification: 85 percent, up from 79 percent in 2017
- Prior authorization: 12 percent, up from 8 percent
- Claim submission: 96 percent, up from 95 percent
- Coordination of benefits/crossover claims: 80 percent, up from 75 percent
- Claim status inquiry: 71 percent, up from 69 percent
- Claim payment: 63 percent, up from 60 percent
- Remittance advice: 48 percent, down from 56 percent
