HCA posts $5.6B profit for 2022: 6 details

Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare saw revenue of $15.5 billion in the fourth quarter of 2022, up from $15.1 billion over the same period in 2021, according to its financial report released Jan. 27. 

Six details:

1. The 182-hospital, for-profit system had a net income of $2.08 billion in the quarter ended Dec. 31, 2022, up from $1.81 billion over the same period last year. 

2. For the year ended Dec. 31, net income attributable to HCA was $5.64 billion on $60.23 billion in revenue. That is compared to $6.96 billion in income on $58.8 billion in revenue in 2021. 

3. HCA expects revenue between $61.5 billion and $63.5 billion in 2023. It is expecting a net income between $4.53 billion and $4.9 billion.

4. Fourth-quarter results include Hurricane Ian's effect on one of its Florida facilities, which caused additional expenses and lost revenue estimated at $50 million. This amount is prior to any insurance recoveries. 

5. Same facility admissions increased 2.9 percent while same facility equivalent admissions increased 5.4 percent in the fourth quarter, compared to the same period last year.

6. "The last three years have been an extraordinary experience for everyone at HCA Healthcare," CEO Sam Hazen said. "It was truly a challenge like no other, but I strongly believe that our board, our management teams and our caregivers have shined through it all."
