Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare is now operating 186 hospitals and 49,588 total licensed beds, up three hospitals and 279 beds from the third quarter, 2023, according to its financial report released Jan. 30.
The report also shows that HCA ended 2023 with 124 freestanding outpatient surgery centers and 24 freestanding endoscopy centers
HCA saw a 0.7 percentage-point increase in outpatient revenues as percentage of patient revenues, from 37.6% 2022 to 38.3% in 2023. Its average length of stay decreased 0.1% year over year from 4.995 days to 4.911 days.
News of the hospital and bed increase comes as HCA invested in large projects and multiple transactions in 2023, including a planned investment of $5.3 billion into pre-approved projects, with $1 billion going to 62 freestanding emergency departments and ambulatory surgery centers.
