Thousands of people stand to see higher rates at Hartford (Conn.) HealthCare hospitals if the health system and health insurer Cigna don't agree on a new contract before Sept. 30, according to a Record-Journal report.
Hartford sent letters to more than 20,000 Cigna customers last week warning of possible higher rates if an agreement isn't reached, according to the report. Hartford owns several Connecticut hospitals including MidState Medical Center in Meriden, Willimantic-based Windham Hospital, and The Hospital of Central Connecticut's Bradley Memorial and New Britain General campuses in Southington and New Britain respectively.
Hartford has been working toward a new contract with Cigna but hasn't made any progress in months, according to the report. Hartford has asked the insurer to pay higher rates, noting that Cigna payment rates have been less than what other insurers reimburse the hospitals for the same care. Cigna spokesman Mark Slitt told the Record-Journal the insurer and Hartford disagree on what qualifies as reasonable reimbursement rates.
