Harris Health to pitch $2.5B bond for new hospital, expanded services

Bellaire, Texas-based Harris Health System on June 6 will pitch a $2.5 billion bond proposal to Harris County commissioners that would earmark funds for hospital upgrades, the development of a new $1.6 billion hospital and expand services at community clinics, according to Community Impact..

Three things to know:

1. The health system aims to keep up with demand for healthcare services amid a rising population in Harris County by building a new Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital, among other initiatives. 

2. The $2.5 billion bond proposal includes $1.6 billion for the creation of the new LBJ Hospital, $400 million to upgrade the existing LBJ Hospital, $500 million for existing community clinic improvements and the opening of three new community clinics, and $400 million to upgrade Ben Taub Hospital.

3. Harris Health owns and operates Houston-based LBJ Hospital and Ben Taub Hospital in the Texas Medical Center, as well as 17 community-based clinics, a free-standing dental center, a chronic dialysis center and three outpatient specialty clinics.
