Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger Health System has reported a 3.4 percent operating margin for fiscal year 2014, down from 4.9 percent for fiscal year 2013.
For the fiscal year ended June 30, Geisinger reported $136.83 million in operating income from $3.98 billion in revenue, compared with $163.34 million in operating income from $3.36 billion in revenue for fiscal year 2013.
Despite the rise in revenue, the health system saw its expenses climb by 20.3 percent year-over-year to $3.84 billion. Expenses related to salaries and benefits rose from $1.42 billion to nearly $1.6 billion, while spending on contracted services increased from $1.06 billion to almost $1.4 billion. Spending on supplies and other expenses also went from $602.73 million in fiscal year 2013 to $726.07 million in 2014.
