From impoverished NFL hopeful to $1B hospital CEO: One leader's surprising path

Rashard Johnson is the CEO of three hospitals within Atlanta-based Emory Healthcare with more than $1 billion in fiscal responsibility, but his path first wound through Orlando-based University of Central Florida, where he played football on scholarship as a defensive back.

"Nobody ever tells you anything about [being a] hospital CEO. I didn't know anything about it," Mr. Johnson said on the YouTube series and podcast The Art of the Interception, hosted by two-time Super Bowl champion and former NFL All-Pro cornerback Asante Samuel.

"How does your job work?" Mr. Johnson asked in his first conversation with a hospital CEO on a site visit to an Orlando hospital. "How does the hospital really work?"

The CEO explained some of how the hospital business works, and Mr. Johnson said he started making connections to "street smart" concepts that he'd learned in his upbringing. Some parallels were even more surprising.

"So the way we get recruited in football, you recruit doctors the same way?" Mr. Johnson asked after learning it was the CEO's job to attract and hire physicians.
