El Dorado-based South Arkansas Regional Hospital began its life as a nonprofit entity July 1 when services officially began to be offered, according to a July 6 Magnolia Report article.
The hospital had previously been operated by one of the biggest for-profit systems, Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems.
"The process of transitioning from a corporate for-profit entity to become a locally owned non-profit hospital is truly unheard of in this day and age of healthcare where many hospitals are struggling to survive," interim President Danna Wagnon Taylor said.
Immediate priorities in the transition include back office reorganization and stabilization, while capital improvements and strategic planning will be focused on toward the fall, according to the report.
The system is planning to raise $12 million over the next few years to invest in the hospital, according to an April news release.
