Prospect Medical Holdings will close Nix Medical Center, a 208-bed hospital in San Antonio with approximately 585 employees, according to the San Antonio Express-News.
Los Angeles-based Prospect Medical Holdings confirmed the hospital's closure on Tuesday, but has not confirmed the precise date. The for-profit operator acquired Nix Health in 2012.
News of the 89-year-old hospital's shutdown follows its letter to Texas officials last week that contained plans to lay off 585 employees and shutter its entire home health department. In late July, Nix's 24-story downtown building was put up for sale, with Prospect Medical Holdings noting that it was "reviewing strategic options" for the hospital.
In a statement regarding the confirmed closure Tuesday, Prospect Medical Holdings said community demand declined for acute care at Nix Medical Center's downtown location over the past year.
"The closure of Nix Medical Center should not impact the community's ability to access care. The 10-mile area surrounding the hospital contains numerous healthcare facilities, including five full-service acute care hospitals with 24-hour emergency rooms. The impact on ER ambulance transport times should be minimal given the close proximity of these other available facilities," Prospect noted in its statement.
Nix will host an on-site job fair will other local health providers, according to KENS5. A date was not specified.
Prospect Medical Holdings owns and operates 20 hospitals, as well as more than 165 clinics and outpatient centers.
