More than 7.1 million people have enrolled in health plans for 2015 through the insurance marketplace, according to The Washington Post.
HHS' most recent enrollment snapshot provided a detailed breakdown of enrollee demographics and plans chosen.
Highlighted below are 10 findings from the snapshot — including new enrollments, active re-enrollments and automatically renewed plans — as reported by The Washington Post.
1. Roughly 633,000 people have selected coverage since mid-December in the 14 states that run their own exchange.
2. Considering many states haven't reported complete re-enrollment information yet, the enrollment count will likely increase.
3. In the 37 states that rely on the federal exchange, roughly 3.4 million people have actively chosen a health plan since Dec. 15, the deadline to sign up for coverage that begins Jan. 1.
4. Of the 3.4 million enrollees, 87 percent qualified for premiums subsidies.
5. Slightly more than half (52 percent) of the new enrollees were purchasing coverage through HealthCare.gov for the first time, whereas the remaining 48 percent were returning customers.
6. During the first month of enrollment last year, only 106,000 people had selected exchange health plans due to severe technology flaws.
7. Nearly a quarter (24 percent) of the 3.4 million new enrollees were between 18 and 34 years old, and 30 percent were between 55 and 64 years old.
8. Sixty-eight percent of the federal exchange enrollees selected silver health plans, which cover 70 percent of medical expenses.
9. Enrollees that identified as Latino increased from 7 percent to 8 percent between 2013 and 2014, whereas enrollees that indentified as African-American decreased from 14 percent in 2013 to 11 percent this year.
10. The White House is on track to hit its goal of enrolling 9.1 million individuals in 2015, even if it is much lower than the Congressional Budget Office's original projection of 13 million.
