Crowdfunding website to prohibit anti-vaccine fundraisers

Indiegogo, an international crowdfunding website, said it will prohibit anti-vaccine fundraisers or any projects making health claims not backed by science, according to Buzzfeed News.

The announcement comes after anti-vaccine advocates raised $86,543 for a documentary called Vaxxed II: The People's Truth, which highlights a false link between vaccines and autism, Buzzfeed News reports.

An Indiegogo spokesperson told the publication that the company now seeks to keep similar anti-vaccine projects off the crowdfunding site

The CDC recently reported that measles cases have hit their highest level since 2000.

Although a recent study published in Annals of Internal Medicine found that the mumps, measles and rubella vaccine does not increase a child's risk of developing autism, some parents have been hesitant to vaccinate their children due to anti-vaccine messages.

According to Buzzfeed News, GoFundMe in March revealed it was prohibiting fundraisers for anti-vaccine misinformation campaigns, and Facebook in February said it was exploring ways to curb anti-vaccine content on the social network.

Additionally, Amazon in March stopped selling two books from its online marketplace that promoted cures for autism based on claims not backed by science.
