Aetna-subsidiary Coventry Health Care has decided not to participate in Louisiana's online health insurance marketplace established under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, according to a report from The Times-Picayune.
Coventry has cited competition and its recent acquisition by health insurer Aetna as the reasons behind its decision, according to the report. Humana, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana, Vantage Health and the Louisiana Health Cooperative are still potential plan providers for state residents purchasing coverage through the new exchange.
Charleston, W.Va.-based Carelink Health Plans — which is run by Coventry Health Care —recently decided not to participate in the individual exchange in West Virginia, where Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield will be the only option for consumers shopping for health plans in the new marketplace.
Coventry's parent company, Aetna, has also opted not to participate in the new exchanges in various states such as New York, Ohio, Maryland, Connecticut,Georgia,Tennessee and Texas.
