Meeting Connecticut's deadline last Friday, five health plans submitted letters of intent claiming they will sell policies through the state's health insurance exchange when it goes live this fall, according to a report by Kaiser Health News.
Currently, insurers planning to participate in Connecticut are Aetna, Anthem, ConnectiCare, United Healthcare and a new member-oriented, non-profit Consumer Operated and Oriented Plan run by the Connecticut State Medical Society, according to the report.
Major payors Cigna and Humana did not submit letters but do not have a large base of small group and individual customers in the state, which are expected to be the exchange's primary market.
The federal healthcare law requires each state to have an online health insurance marketplace intended to boost competition for individuals and small groups and to screen for customers eligible for federal subsidies. Connecticut is among the states with the earliest deadlines for insurers to enroll in the exchanges, along with Maryland and California.
