Connecticut hospitals, UnitedHealthcare ink agreement

Insurer UnitedHealthcare and Hartford HealthCare, the parent company of Hartford (Conn.) Hospital and The Hospital of Central Connecticut, which has campuses in New Britain and Southington, have agreed on a new contract, according to a Hartford Courant report.

Patients insured by UnitedHealthcare will continue to receive treatment at in-network rates at the hospitals under the deal, which the parties reached less than two hours before their old contract was set to expire, according to the report.  The "multi-year network relationship" applies to all of UnitedHealthcare's individual and Medicare customers as well as those in employer-sponsored health insurance plans. It also applies to UnitedHealthcare subsidiary Oxford Health Plans.

Negotiations between Hartford HealthCare and the insurer have been ongoing for months. Neither party gave details about the "sticking points" that led to extended discussions, according to the report.

The contract dates vary for Hartford HealthCare's other Connecticut hospitals. Contracts with William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich, MidState Medical Center in Meriden and Windham Hospital in Willimantic expire May 26. Additionally, UnitedHealthcare's contract with the Hartford Physician Hospital Organization expires June 15.
