Connecticut governor signs controversial healthcare affordability bill into law

A bill designed to prohibit Connecticut hospital facility fees, among other issues, passed into law June 27.

The law aims to reduce healthcare costs and improve healthcare delivery, Gov. Ned Lamont's office said when signing the bill.

The facility fee changes, which generate approximately $412 million annually for hospitals, have been criticized at a time when expenses are significantly higher for healthcare systems.

The new legislation will continue to allow hospitals to charge the fees for services provided at an emergency department or freestanding ED, as well as for certain services, such as wound care and organ transplants. The facility fee changes go into effect July 1, 2024.

"This is a complex issue that needs to be tackled from multiple angles and we need the involvement of all parties — insurers, hospitals, doctors, employers, and consumers — in this effort to provide real solutions to lower health care costs," Mr. Lamont said.
