Congress urged to pay $2B more to safety-net hospitals, AHA says

The Medicare Payment Advisory Commission is continuing to urge Congress to up Medicare payments for 2024, including an additional $2 billion for safety-net hospitals, the American Hospital Association said Dec. 9.

MedPAC, which will vote in January on the raft of measures, is also calling to up Medicare payment rates for hospital inpatient and outpatient services by the current law amount plus 1 percent; increase payments to physicians; and reduce rates for home health services, skilled nursing facilities and rehab centers, AHA said.

The AHA also wrote to MedPAC Dec. 1 urging a recommendation to Congress that an additional amount be added to the 2024 Medicare fiscal payment to reflect inadequate reimbursement to healthcare systems facing "unprecedented" inflationary and other pressures in 2022.
