Warren (Ohio) City Hospital, a collaborative group of business and community leaders, has raised enough money to acquire Dallas-based Steward Health Care's Warren, Ohio-based Trumbull Regional Medical Center, a spokesperson for the organization told Becker's.
Steward shared plans Aug. 21 to close both Trumbull Regional Medical Center and Warren-based Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital on or around Sept. 20, resulting in nearly 1,000 layoffs.
Warren City Hospital shared plans in early August to purchase and upgrade the hospital prior to Steward's closure announcement.
Now that the group has secured the funds to purchase the hospital, it is working to raise enough money to keep the facility operational. John Woods, secretary of Warren City Hospital, told WFMJ he estimates that it will cost around $9 million per month for the first 60-90 days.
The move to purchase Trumbull Regional Medical Center comes as Steward, which sought Chapter 11 protection May 6, is working to offload the majority of its other hospitals.
The for-profit health system's Dorchester, Mass.-based Carney Hospital and Ayer, Mass.-based Nashoba Valley Medical Center are set to close Aug. 31, which will result in the laying off of 1,243 employees.
Steward also pushed back the bid deadline to Sept. 9 for its Arizona hospitals, Odessa (Texas) Regional Medical Center and Texarkana, Texas-based Wadley Regional Medical Center, according to an Aug. 25 bankruptcy court notice obtained by Becker's. The sale hearing date has also been "adjourned to a date to be determined."
An Aug. 26 bankruptcy court notice, also obtained by Becker's, revealed that the Aug. 27 hearing scheduled for Steward's Arkansas, Louisiana and Massachusetts hospitals has been pushed back to Sept. 4.
Steward did not have a comment for Becker's regarding Warren City Hospital's push to purchase Trumbull Regional Medical Center.
