CMS giving states $110M to expand Money Follows the Person program

CMS is offering more than $110 million to expand access to home and community-based services through Medicaid's Money Follows the Person program.

The program gives states money to support seniors and people with disabilities who choose to transition out of institutions and back into their homes and communities, according to a March 31 HHS news release

Four things to know:

1. Awards of up to $5 million are available to more than 20 states and territories that are not currently participating in the program.

2. The money will be used to support initial planning and implementation to get the state/territory programs off the ground.

3. The program's supplemental services will now be 100 percent federally funded.

4. CMS is expanding the definition of supplemental services to include short-term housing and food assistance.
