CMS approves South Carolina's Medicaid work requirements

CMS approved South Carolina's request to implement Medicaid work requirements Dec. 12, according to NPR affiliate WJCT.

Under the work requirements, most residents who are eligible for Medicaid coverage must prove they meet an 80-hour-a-month work requirement or are volunteering or looking for a job. If they can't prove they have work and don't qualify for exemptions, Medicaid recipients may become ineligible for coverage. In addition to the work requirement, the state will expand Medicaid eligibility to an additional 46,000 residents.

To-date, almost a dozen states have tried to implement Medicaid work requirements. The requirements are being challenged in court as thousands of Americans have lost their health coverage.
