California legislation takes aim at surprise ambulance bills

A California assemblywoman has introduced a bill that would prohibit surprise medical bills for ground ambulance services.

State and federal laws have banned surprise bills from out-of-network doctors, hospitals, emergency rooms and air ambulances, but ground ambulances "remain a glaring gap in these protections," bill sponsor Tasha Boerner said in an April 17 news release from her office.

The legislation recently passed the Assembly Emergency Management Committee and now heads to the Assembly Health Committee for consideration, according to the release.
