California hospital to end maternity services, lay off 65

University of Southern California Verdugo Hills Hospital in Glendale will close its labor and delivery services, along with its neonatal intensive care unit, on Nov. 20 and lay off 65 employees, according to a Sept. 20 WARN notice obtained by Becker's.

The affected positions include multiple specialty registered nurses, technicians, lactation consultants and nursing managers, the report said.

The decision was based on an examination of services at the hospital, community needs and shifting demographics, a spokesperson for the hospital said in a Sept. 26 statement shared with Becker's

"Leadership has closely engaged with staff and labor unions representing impacted staff to help support this transition, exploring potential retraining opportunities or employment opportunities at other local hospitals when possible," the spokesperson said.
