California county looks into running bankrupt hospital

The San Benito County (Calif.) Board of Supervisors submitted a letter of intent to look into managing Hollister, Calif.-based Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital, which filed for bankruptcy in May, BenitoLink reported Oct. 25.

The county is seeking to create a Joint Powers Authority, which would include regional stakeholders Hollister, San Juan Bautista and San Benito Health Care District managing the hospital, according to the report. Management consultants submitted a report to the county that showed the hospital lacked financial stability and that residents were seeking care elsewhere.

In August, Hazel Hawkins was one of 17 distressed hospitals that received a loan from the state to stabilize its financial situation.
