C.W. Williams Community Health Center in Charlotte, N.C. is bankrupt, according to a Charlotte Post report.
The report cites "financial and legal setbacks" as part of the reasoning behind the health center board's decision to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
"Without an infusion of new money, C.W. Williams teetered on the verge of insolvency and half of its employees were laid off and payroll deferred," the report reads.
C.W. Williams did not receive $97,500 in homeless services money from Mecklenburg County (N.C.) because it failed to provide an audited financial statement for fiscal year 2013-14, according to the report.
And earlier this year, that county's manager made a recommendation to shift about $271,000 to Charlotte Community Health Clinic, which is also in Charlotte, according to the report.
Based on a statement from the health center's interim board chairman, Nelson Adesegha, C.W. Williams, which serves low-income and indigent patients, will operate as a "debtor-in-possession," according to the report.
According to the report, Mr. Adesegha has said C.W. Williams plans to reorganize operations and finances and "has every intent on continuing to provide primary health care services to residents of Mecklenburg County and the larger community."
