Baptist Health to cut medical coding jobs

Louisville, Ky.-based Baptist Health will eliminate 37 medical coding jobs as it transfers some of the work to a New Jersey-based revenue cycle management company, according to TV station WDRB.

The affected jobs are at Baptist Health Louisville, Baptist Health Floyd in New Albany, Ind., and other Baptist Health system facilities.

Baptist Health spokesperson Kit Fullenlove Barry told Becker's Hospital Review the decision to eliminate the medical coding jobs is a result of a co-sourcing arrangement with Newark, N.J.-based RCM company AGS Health. Under the arrangement, Baptist Health will use internal as well as AGS resources for medical coding.

"AGS will handle ancillary and emergency department medical coding, affecting 37 coding positions at seven of our hospitals. It is too early to tell how many people ultimately may be affected because we hope many will re-apply for other spots within Baptist Health," she said.

She said affected workers will receive severance pay and job search help.
