WellPoint subsidiary Anthem Blue Cross has said it won't participate in the new health insurance exchange for small businesses in California, according to a Los Angeles Times report.
Anthem, California's largest insurer for small employers, has said it will continue to sell coverage outside of Covered California, the state-run market, according to the report. The insurer will also offer policies to individuals in the state-run exchange.
Anthem decided to withdraw from the small business health options program after California lifted its requirement insurers that wanted to sell in the individual exchange also had to offer policies to small businesses, Anthem spokesman Darrel Ng told the Los Angeles Times.
Covered California has said small businesses should still see competitive rates and have plenty of choices without Anthem's participation.
