Indianapolis-based health insurer Anthem (formerly known as WellPoint) and independent Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans led enrollment in the first year private coverage was offered through the online marketplaces established under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, according to a recent study from Avalere Health.
For the study, Avalere looked at the most complete market share data available of those who purchased health insurance on the government-run exchanges. The data was available in 15 states.

Both Anthem and the Blues plans have been extremely active players in the insurance marketplaces. As of March, 80 percent of Anthem's exchange enrollees were new customers to the company, meaning they either switched from another insurer or were previously uninsured.
